Ludwig Windhorst was one of the key Catholic politicians/parliamentarians in the second half of the 19th century. As leader of the Catholic "Zentrumspartei", he was a strong opponent of Bismarck in the "Kulturkampf". Indeed, with Bishop von Ketteler, Adolf Kolping, Franz Brands and others, he was one of the pioneers of Catholic Social Thought and Practice years before Rerum Novarum.
