From the Heart of Metepec to Castel Gandolfo: the Soteno Artisans Restore the Borgo Laudato si’ Nativity Scene, Bringing Together Art, Faith, and Sustainability

The Municipality of Castel Gandolfo, the Fundación del Dr. Simi, and Borgo Laudato si’ are pleased
to welcome from Metepec, Mexico, Israel Soteno, master ceramicist, and his wife Blanca Jiménez, a highly respected
artist and recent winner of the Mexican National Prize for Aniline Painting. Their visit offers an important opportunity
for intercultural dialogue and demonstrates how traditional art can foster values of care and harmony with Creation.

The two artists will travel to Italy to restore the monumental life-size Nativity Scene created by Israel’s father, Tiburcio Soteno, one of the most renowned masters of the Metepec ceramic tradition.
The Nativity Scene was created in the family’s historic workshop, which has also produced works now held in major international institutions, including the British Museum in London.

The clay sculptures, shaped and decorated using sustainable techniques passed down through generations, reflect a deep connection to the land, to indigenous culture, and to a body of knowledge that has crossed continents and is now preserved and celebrated at Borgo Laudato si’, in the papal gardens of Castel Gandolfo.

On Friday December 19 and Saturday December 20, Israel Soteno will work in the Hall of the Municipality of Castel
Gandolfo (from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) to restore and reconstruct the 17 large clay sculptures that make up the
Nativity Scene.

His work is not only a valuable act of artistic conservation, but also an act of cultural renewal rooted in sustainable practices: the use of natural materials, the recovery of original forms, and careful respect for the environment – core principles of the Metepec ceramic tradition.

Working alongside him, Blanca Jiménez will bring the sculptures back to life through decoration and finishing.

Thanks to her expertise in aniline painting, a technique recognized for its low environmental impact. She will highlight the harmony between art, nature, and spirituality.

The restoration of this monumental Nativity Scene stands as a strong example of sustainability: restoring existing
works, using natural materials, preserving ancestral artisanal techniques, and promoting international dialogue
based on respect for and care of Creation.

Once completed, the restored Nativity Scene will be on display until February 2nd 2026 as the official Nativity Scene of Borgo Laudato si’, becoming a universal symbol of faith, beauty, and ecological responsibility.

The City of Castel Gandolfo, Fundación del Dr. Simiand Borgo Laudato si’ invite residents, visitors, and members of the press to attend and witness this remarkable project of artistic renewal and sustainable commitment.

Blessing of the Nativity Scene – Saturday, 20 December
On Saturday, December 20th at 4:00 p.m., Cardinal Fabio Baggio will bless the Nativity Scene on the steps of the
Pontifical Parish of Castel Gandolfo, San Tommaso da Villanova.

The blessing will be followed by a celebratory gathering for the children and families of Castel Gandolfo, featuring
the breaking of a Mexican piñata—a symbol of joy, communal sharing, and cultural exchange.
